An industry leader in plastic pallet servicing

Although in its relative infancy, RTP – durable, multi-use transport devices such as plastic pallets– has already undergone a revolution. The basic principle of RTP sees equipment delivered to the supplier or producer, packed with goods and then delivered to an end user. In many cases, the packaging is then collected for washing and inspection before being returned into the closed logistics loop.

The genesis of PSE came when co-founders, Andrew Parkinson, an expert in the design and maintenance of hygienic washing systems and Jane Gorick, a leading figure in the UK’s logistics sector for over thirty years’ who previously built pallet pooling specialist LPR’s UK presence, noticed a small but significant gap in the pallet market. They recognised that the durability and improved integrity of plastic pallets over their wooden counterparts could deliver considerable cost savings for businesses.

Gorick and Parkinson identified that room existed for a dynamic business to provide RTP and plastic pallet servicing to deliver increased lifespan and a higher ROI. Typically, many businesses primarily use a packaging method that has a lifespan of just one trip, such as cardboard, meaning higher costs of purchasing materials. A core benefit of RTP is that it can be used multiple times, cutting material costs and reducing the overall packaging spend for businesses.

With just 12 weeks to take PSE from concept to launch, Gorick and Parkinson identified a premises in Nuneaton, chosen because of its location and transport links. Indeed, Gorick and Parkinson recognised that for PSE to make a real difference to the logistics and RTP industry, and for plastic pallets to become a viable choice over their wooden counterparts, nationwide coverage was essential.

That’s why, since its launch in January 2016, Gorick and Parkinson have overseen the development of facilities in Belfast, Dublin and across the North of England.

Indeed, just over a year after its launch, PSE expanded once again – investing £350,000 in a state-of-the-art Leeds facility which could create up to 25 jobs in the area at full capacity. Spread across a 26,115 sq ft site, the facility can handle more than one million pallets per year through its wash, inspection and repair service.

The addition of the Leeds facility to its nationwide network means PSE can provide customers with reduced cost RTP and plastic pallet servicing, making the collection, transportation, servicing and returning of reusable packaging part of one seamless process – maximising asset utilisation and facilitating the potential conversion from one trip packaging to RTP.

A key benefit of the network is the fact that the PSE sites are available for any company to use. Major businesses who handle huge volumes can run a dedicated network themselves, whereas the PSE solution gives smaller users of RTP access to plastic pallet servicing at the same scale of nationwide coverage.

PSE’s network has led to a reduction in logistics costs for businesses, as well as streamlining the process of plastic pallet servicing. By doing so, the PSE process frees up time and money for smaller RTP users to develop their own innovative services and ideas. This just wouldn’t be possible if they didn’t have access to the PSE network.

Just 18 months since its launch, PSE services more than 70% of the RTP washing market and works with some of the country’s leading brand names in the FMCG, retail and automotive sectors. Through plastic pallet servicing, PSE is helping to push new boundaries and disrupt the pallet pooling industry status quo, all while setting new benchmarks for efficiency, cost-effectiveness and sustainability.
